Delta-8 THC: What Is It and Why Should I Care?

Much of the talk about cannabis these days focuses on the two primary cannabinoids most people are familiar with: CBD and THC. But truth be told, cannabis plants contain more than a hundred cannabinoids in varying volumes. They also contain terpenes and other substances that cannabis users appreciate.

Among the additional cannabinoids is one known as Delta-8. Perhaps you've seen CBD products that contain Delta-8. Actually, we would be surprised if you haven't as Delta-8 is the hottest thing in the CBD market right now. It has proved popular enough that producers are now looking to roll out the red carpet for other alternative cannabinoids.

A Natural and Synthetic Cannabinoid

As to what Delta-8 actually is, science considers it an isomer of Delta-9. In chemistry, isomers are substances with the same molecular makeup – which is to say they have the same molecules in the same volumes. Their differences are found in how those molecules are arranged. Molecular arrangement impacts how a cannabinoid affects the human body.

Delta-8 is a naturally occurring cannabinoid. Most cannabis plants contain at least some of it. However, there generally isn't enough of it in plant material to warrant the work of getting it out. So instead, manufacturers transform CBD into Delta-8 THC in a lab setting.

Incidentally, HHC and THC-0 are two more synthetic cannabinoids that seem to be popular right now. All have different effects on the human body. Delta-8 is said to have a slightly intoxicating effect on most people. 'Slightly' is the operative word here. Delta-8 is by no means as potent as Delta-9 THC.

Delta-8 vs. CBD

The most notable difference between Delta-8 and CBD is the intoxicating effect. We have already discussed how Delta-8 makes most people feel. As for CBD, it has no intoxicating effects whatsoever. This is because CBD doesn't bind to human cannabinoid receptors in the same way that THC does.

As a side note, we have been studying CBD long enough to have a fairly good understanding of its medical benefits. Not so with Delta-8. The good news is that research into all these new alternative cannabinoids should ultimately reveal how they can benefit human health.

Purchasing Delta-8 Products

We do not carry any Delta-8 products under the Yammy CBD brand. You might check out Deity Wellness if you are interested in Delta-8. Their website offers plenty of helpful information along with a good selection of Delta-8 products. Just note that Delta-8 THC is not legal everywhere in the U.S.

According to the Deity Wellness site, Delta-8 is banned or restricted in the following states:

  • Alaska
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Colorado
  • Delaware
  • Kentucky
  • Idaho
  • Iowa
  • Mississippi
  • Montana
  • New York
  • North Dakota
  • Rhode Island
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Washington.

The big concern among regulators is the fact that Delta-8 is psychoactive. Interestingly enough, the alternative cannabinoid is not banned by federal law. Federal law only addresses Delta-9 THC. Therefore, certain states with concerns about Delta-8 have taken it upon themselves to ban the substance.

All of this may change should Congress ever manage to get a decriminalization bill to the president's desk. But that remains to be seen. In the meantime, Delta-8 is available on a state-by-state basis.
